JUSTICE by Michael Sandel

These days, I'm studying "Justice" by Michael Sandel. This book is a bestseller in Korea. I ordered both Korean and English versions of this book, and thanksfully watch his lecture video at http://www.justiceharvard.org for free.

Joke first; His face and voice reminds me "Ben" at the famous TV show "LOST." Am I the only one that it occured to?

To my joy, he cited many books or philosophers which are also in my bookshelf, especially "Great Books of the Western World" by Britannica. I bought this set of books as used at a San Diego public library only for 70 dollars, original private library edition of 1952, older than my age.
One of my hope is that I could read all these books sometimes.
I searched if there is a set of books like "Great Books of the EASTERN World", but I could not find. Some announced best books of China, Japan and Korea, however those are not available as a set.
Instead of buying great books of EASTERN world (because it was not available to me), I bought a cartoon book set by Cài Zhìzhōng(채지충, 蔡志忠), of which Korean translation is quite unsatisfactory.

Anyhow now I am very wondered how the Eastern great philosophers would answer to Michael Sandel's fundmental questions.

Mental Heritage

1. Language and Culture -> Art
- Korean (Primary), English (Secondary)
- I'm very much mixedly influenced by Eastern (Emotional) and Western (Reasoning) Culture.
2. Religion
- I do not have one now, but am interested in all kinds of religions.
- I was once a Christian (from 1978 to 1983).
- I was also once a Buddhist (from 1983 to 1987).
- Sometimes I was indulged in cult or some sub-standard religions.
3. Ideology -> Politics, Economics
- I do not have one, somewhat neutral.
4. Philosophy
- I like to be philosophical. I like Russel, Confucius, and many other philosophers.
- I like Analects very much. Some may consider me a Confucian.
- Once I was also very indulged in Tao-Te Ching.
5. Science
- I'm very fond of all science area, currently especailly in nonlinear mixed effects modeling (a kind of mathematically intensive statistics).
- I admire Newton, Einstein.
- I also like Richard Dawkins, Edward Wilson, Desmond Morris.
- I envy Feynman.
- I respect Lewis Scheiner, co-inventor of NONMEM software.
6. Technology
- I'm also very intereted in technology, currently in computer programming.
- I think Stuart Beal, NONMEM coder, is also a genius.

Principle of Random Permutation

You may use 'sample' function in R, and it is sufficient usually.
The following is one of my favoriate code. Here it is expressed in R language.

# R coding showing the principle of random permutation
RanPermute <- function(n)
{
    x <- cbind(1:n, runif(n))
    return(x[order(x[,2]),1])
}

# Test code
RanPermute(100)

Cholesky Decomposition

See this PDF file for the R script.

See this MS-Excel file for a case of manual calculation.

Cholesky decomposition is only valid for positive definite matrix.
It may be used to test if a matrix is positive definite.
NONMEM use this for the transformation of omega and sigma matrix into unconstrained parameter (UCP). UCP is previously called STP(scaled transformed parameter).
For the inversion of hessian or linear system solution, LDL' transformation is more useful.
During the minimization process we cannot guarantee that hessian matrix is positive definite but which is always symmetric.
LDL' transformation can be used always for any real symmetric matrix.

Appendix V. Glossary  (PDF full version p2281-2)

Phrases often have different meanings in mathematics than in everyday usage. Here I have collected definitions of some mathematical terms which might confuse the novice.

beyond the scope of this text: Beyond the comprehension of the author.

difficult: Essentially impossible. Note that mathematicians never refer to problems they have solved as being difficult. This would either be boastful, (claiming that you can solve difficult problems), or self-deprecating, (admitting that you found the problem to be difficult).

interesting: This word is grossly overused in math and science. It is often used to describe any work that the author has done, regardless of the work’s significance or novelty. It may also be used as a synonym for difficult. It has a completely different meaning when used by the non-mathematician. When I tell people that I am a mathematician they typically respond with, “That must be interesting.”, which means, “I don’t know anything about math or what mathematicians do.” I typically answer, “No. Not really.”

non-obvious or non-trivial: Real fuckin’ hard.

one can prove that . . . : The “one” that proved it was a genius like Gauss. The phrase literally means “you haven’t got a chance in hell of proving that . . . ”

simple: Mathematicians communicate their prowess to colleagues and students by referring to all problems as simple or trivial. If you ever become a math professor, introduce every example as being “really quite trivial.” (Say like this “This next pwobwem is weawy quite twiviaw”.)

How this queer result could happen?

Enter and verify the result of the following equation in R, MS-EXCEL, or any other software.
((2*10^(-30) + 10^30) - 10^30) - 10^(-30)
Or
((2e-30 + 1e30) - 1e30) - 1e-30

(Do not miss "=" at the first place in MS-EXCEL.)

Floating Point Arithmetic - 2010

99/(72*1.3) == 99/72/1.3

같은 내용을 MS-EXCEL에서도 test해보세요.
=IF(99/(72*1.3)=99/72/1.3,"T","F")

좀 더 자세한 것은 첨부파일을 참고하세요.
읽기 쉬운 것은 아닌데, 여유 되면 보세요.
